The Middle Aged Adventures of Sprocket Man
The new and improved Sprocket Bike
“Safety first,” Stephen thought as he threw on his helmet over the handset.
It took skill to put on his helmet while peddling down the road, but after years of practice, he had figured out how to do it pretty well.
Stephen looked behind him. The same man that had been shooting at him in the store was now climbing into his car. Another goon was sitting in the driver seat. The chase was on!
“Hello? Is this thing on?” Stephanie’s voice rang over the headset.
“Yeah, I hear you loud and clear. Breaker Breaker 1-9!”
Stephanie sighed, “Dad humor is not appropriate right now!”
Stephen smiled and chuckled, “Sorry!”
“Listen, if you are going to get out of this alive, you are going to have to listen to me. I added some features to your bike so that it will be more fit for a superhero! Hopefully after you shake these guys off you will be clear to get to the news station.”
“Roger,” Stephen quickly said while focusing on peddling as hard as he could.
“First, let’s slow them down a little. Push the yellow button on your right handle.”
Stephen looked down at his handlebars and realized that there were now several buttons on each bar. He found the yellow button on the right bar and pressed it. A small compartment opened up in the hub of the back tire and started spewing oil everywhere until the whole road was covered in oil behind him. The car with the goons was forced to slow down.
“Not the most road safe thing to do!” Stephen said, a little annoyed.
“You’re alive; you’re welcome!” Stephanie answered.
“Truth, now how do I brush these guys off for good?”
“OK, this is a last resort kind of thing, but push the red button on the left handlebar.”
“What’s that going to do?”
“Well, it’s going to let out an EMP, shutting down all electrical devices, including most cars in a mile radius for 15 minutes.”
“Where did you get your hands on something like that?”
“Don’t worry about that right now, just use it!
Stephen reluctantly pushed the red button and a sign, almost like the sound of breaking the sonic barrier, came from the bike. Everything around him turned off from vehicles, to electric lights, to billboards. Stephen was in the dark.
“Good job, Stephanie!” Stephen cheered, “You got us out of that mess!”
“I can’t wait until you see the other features!” Stephanie said cheerfully, “If you press the green button a green shell will come out of the bike and hit the driver in front of you.”
“A green shell? What’s that?”
Stephanie rolled her eyes and sighed in annoyance, “Ugh. you are so old. Get to the news station quick!”
Stephen peddled as fast as he could. He knew he was getting close when suddenly he saw the one person he did not want to see- Captain Courageous!
